St George's Basilica

Description

The history of Malta's St George's Basilica begins hundreds of years ago. A combination of archeological evidence and ancient documentation indicate the church was constructed over a pagan temple by the year 1450. Through the centuries, the parish has stood out in Malta's history, particularly noteworthy being in 1678 when the church's present day structure was constructed in the Latin cross shape, the first of its kind on the island.
