Large Flying Foxes (Pteropus vampyrus)

Description

Meet the Large Flying Fox (Pteropus vampyrus), one of the largest bat species in the world! With a wingspan of up to 1.5 meters, these gentle giants are crucial for pollination and seed dispersal in their ecosystems.

While you can spot them in places throughout Southeast Asia, this colony was photographed emerging out from their mangrove hidden cave in Kalong Island, near Komodo, where they created a mesmerizing spectacle at sunset.

Unfortunately, these amazing creatures are listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and hunting pressures. Let’s spread awareness and work towards their conservation!
